Being told you have a “disc bulge” can sound alarming — but it’s far more common than most people realise. Many disc bulges are not dangerous, and many people with disc bulges have no pain at all.
When symptoms do occur, the right advice and treatment can make a big difference.
At Sport & Spinal Health (SASH), we regularly help people manage disc-related back and leg pain and return to normal activity with confidence.

What is a disc bulge?
Spinal discs sit between the bones of your spine and act as shock absorbers. A disc bulge occurs when the disc extends beyond its usual boundary.
Importantly:
A bulge does not mean the disc has ruptured
It does not automatically mean nerve damage
Many disc bulges settle with conservative care
Common causes
Disc bulges can develop due to:
Repetitive bending, lifting, or twisting
Prolonged sitting
Sudden increases in physical load
Reduced trunk and hip strength
Age-related disc changes
They often occur gradually rather than from one single incident.
Symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the location and sensitivity of nearby structures. These may include:
Local low back pain
Pain that worsens with sitting or bending
Pain referring into the buttock or leg
Pins and needles or numbness (in some cases)
Not all disc bulges cause nerve symptoms.
What treatments help?
Management is focused on reducing irritation and restoring movement confidence, not “putting the disc back in”.
Treatment may include:
Education and reassurance
Hands-on therapy to improve movement
Exercise to build trunk and hip strength
Gradual return to daily activities and work
Most people improve without injections or surgery.

Do disc bulges heal?
Yes — discs can adapt and symptoms often settle over time. Staying active with guidance leads to better outcomes than prolonged rest.
When should you book?
Book an appointment if:
Pain is persistent or worsening
You’re unsure what movements are safe
Symptoms are affecting work, sleep, or exercise
Pain is travelling down the leg
